My Story: Repurposing a Slow Feeder for Water and Treat Fun
When I first got the Neater Pet Brands Stainless Steel Slow Feed Bowl, my goal was to slow down Jax's eating. But Jax, being the clever pup that he is, figured out how to tip the bowl over and eat off the floor—so much for that plan! I knew I needed a different feeding bowl (which I’ll cover in another article), but I didn't want this bowl to go to waste.
That's when I came up with a new use for it. One of the biggest concerns for many pet owners is making sure their dogs drink enough water. Dehydration can lead to long-term health problems, and dogs often don’t know how much water they should be drinking. On top of that, if you're like me and work outside the home, you probably worry about your dog getting bored. That's where this bowl really came in handy.
Turning the Slow Feeder into a Water Treat Challenge
Instead of using the bowl for food, I decided to make it a fun, interactive tool for hydration. I filled the bowl halfway with water, froze it, and then sprinkled in some healthy treats—peanut butter, blueberries, and other fresh goodies. After adding a bit more water to hold the treats in place, I froze it again. Once the entire bowl was filled and frozen, Jax had a spinning ice block to work through, with the treats as a reward!
The Best Part? It Spins!
As the ice melts, this stainless steel bowl starts spinning, which adds an extra layer of mental stimulation for Jax. It becomes not only a tasty challenge but also an exciting game that keeps him occupied while I’m at work. Plus, he stays hydrated in the process!
Why I Recommend This Hack for Your Pup
- Promotes Hydration: Dogs often don’t drink enough water on their own. This game-like challenge encourages them to stay hydrated while they lick their way through the frozen treat.
- Mental Stimulation: The spinning feature of the bowl as the ice melts keeps dogs entertained, especially if they're left alone for extended periods.
- Easy to Prepare: Simply freeze layers of water and healthy treats, and your dog will have hours of fun and hydration.
- Durable and Safe: The stainless steel bowl is sturdy and safe for even the most eager pups to enjoy.
This has become one of my favorite ways to ensure Jax stays both mentally engaged and hydrated, especially during hot days or while I'm out running errands. If you’re looking for a creative way to use a slow feed bowl, I highly recommend trying this hack!
